9 Effective Home Remedies For Dark Knees

9 Effective Home Remedies For Treating Dark Knees

Dark knees are not only a great heartache for women and men of all ages, but can also be extremely unsightly. Rough and course skin on the knees could be due to dryness of the skin.

Though this is not a skin condition that needs to be treated with strong medications, they are nevertheless very important for women to be rid of as they can cause severe depressions and embarrassment.

Accumulation of dead cells on the knees can make the skin thick and coarse and darker than the other parts of the body. The first step in prevention of dark knees is to find some time for exfoliation of the skin and proper moisturisation afterwards.  Luckily again, nature has given us a hoard of products that can be safely used to make homemade scrubs and moisturisers that help to protect the skin from the harmful effects of chemicals present in the cosmetics and skin care products that you use.

Home Remedies for Dark Knees

1. Moisturising Your Skin is very important when you develop dark knees. In fact, a well moisturised skin will never develop dark knees as the skin is well hydrated and supple to prevent the development of coarse and scaly formations on the top layer. Use a creamy moisturiser for massaging the dry areas, especially the knees and the elbows which are prone to drying and cracking.

People with very dry skin must massage the skin on the knees using a good cream or lotion. Shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil etc. are great for nourishing the skin and preventing dead cell formations.

2. Just as important as moisturising your skin is exfoliation and scrubbing your skin to perfection. Homemade scrubs are a dime a dozen and each one is better than the other in terms of effectiveness and long lasting results.

For preparing an exfoliating scrub, take one tablespoon of fresh cream, one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of oatmeal that is grinded.

Mix well and smear it on your dark knees. Allow the skin of your knees to get soaked which will soften the dry skin cells. Now, you can move your fingers in circular motions both ways in order to release the dead cells. Continue for fifteen minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. For locking the moisture inside, apply olive oil or cocoa butter cream on the knees.

3. There are many scrubs available in the market. But none of them can surpass the pure, skin friendly natural scrub that gives precious treatment to our delicate skin. For making a simple exfoliating scrub, mix equal amounts of lemon juice and sugar. The coarse grains of sugar will easily exfoliate the dead cells accumulated in the knee. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent and removes the darkness on the knees.  As a mixture of lemon and sugar can remove the effects of suntan, this is also a great treatment you can give your face, neck and hands after you are in the sun.

4. Baking soda and rosewater is another mixture you can use for effective exfoliation.  Mix equal amounts of the same and apply on the darkened and coarse knee. Leave it for 5-10 minutes before you start exfoliation. Massage in circular motion for 5 minutes and rinse off after that. You can apply olive oil or cocoa butter after that in order to remove the dryness after exfoliation and to soothe irritated skin.

5. Bananas are great for exfoliation and removing the dryness and roughness form your skin. For making a scrub that will leave your skin soft and supple too, take avocado and mash it to form a paste. Avocados are rich in fat and will help you leave the knees supple and soft to touch. They are also good in lightening dark spots and skin pigmentation. Mix avocado paste and banana paste and add some milk cream to it. Apply this paste on the knee and massage for fifteen minutes. Once you are through, your skin will be nourished and smooth without the need for further moistursation.

6. Once you start scrubbing, the skin on the knees requires constant moisturisation in order to prevent dryness for the rough treatment. For making a moisturiser at home, mix Vaseline and honey and leave it on the knee overnight. You can cover the knee with a piece of cloth to keep the mixture on the knee. Doing this every day will prevent further dryness as the humectant qualities of honey will seal the moisture given by Vaseline effectively.

7. Another effective moisturising cream that can be prepared at home is by using mustard oil and paraffin wax. Melt enough paraffin wax in mustard oil by heating it in low flame. Heat till the mustard oil starts burning. After it is cooled, you can apply on the knee and massage it into the exfoliated skin for ten minutes. Leave it for half an hour so that the oil penetrates the dry skin thoroughly. You can wipe it off with warm cloth.

8. Coconut oil is known for its goodness on the skin. Coconut oil can remove dryness and make your skin soft. For making a scrub, take one teaspoon of coconut oil and half a teaspoon of lemon juice. Massage it into the skin of the knees and leave it for fifteen minutes. After this, you can wash it off with warm water or wipe with a wet towel.

9. Diet too plays a great role in removing skin darkening and pigmentation. Food rich in iron like spinach and other green leafy vegetables must be included in the diet to combat anaemia. Anaemia can be a major cause of skin pigmentation, especially on the knees and elbows. Anaemia must be treated with iron supplements and medication. This will remove the dark knees on its own.

Treating dark knees is of utmost importance for women who would love to wear short skirts and shorts. With a little care and time at home, dark knees can easily be controlled and prevented. If you have dark knees, avoid using hot water as it can make your skin more dry and coarse.
