5 Tips To Effectively Treat Dry Hair With Home Remedies

Hair, like nails, are dead cells because they do not multiply in number or reproduce. But this does not mean that your hair cannot look shiny, smooth and lustrous.

Many women, especially those with long hair, suffer from the problem of dry hair. Typically, dry hair have split ends, are lusterless and do not look healthy. They are also prone to breaking up easily because. However, dry hair can be easily fixed.

You will find plenty of hair products in the market that are especially formulated for dry hair. But these products are full of chemicals which might damage your hair with prolonged use. Besides, the hair products from quality brands are very expensive and may not suit every body’s budget. So what do you do? The answer is simple. Use home remedies to treat dry hair.

The home remedies are as effective as any commercially available hair product but are minus the chemicals which make them safe for use over a prolonged period. Here are a few easy and simple ways to cure the problem of dry hair using home remedies.

1. Treatment of hair with mayonnaise

Bizarre as this may sound mayonnaise have been used for years to treat dry hair. Mayonnaise is greasy and oily which makes it the perfect solution for dry hair. Simply buy a jar of egg mayonnaise without any flavors or add-ons. Scoop a dollop of mayonnaise from the jar and apply it all over your hair taking care to cover the scalp and the split ends. Wear a shower cap and leave the mayonnaise on hair for 45 minutes. Wash off using lukewarm water and a mild shampoo formulated for dry hair. Do this treatment once a week to keep the hair from getting dry and brittle. Mayonnaise will also effectively take care of spilt ends.

2. Treatment of hair with petroleum jelly

Normally, petroleum jelly is used to treat the problem of dry lips and skin especially during winter. However, petroleum jelly can also be used for treating dry hair. Take a dollop of petroleum jelly and pour two tablespoons hot water over it. Mix the two and apply the solution on your hair including the scalp. Soak a clean towel in hot water and wring it dry. Wrap your hair with the warm towel and leave for 30 minutes.

This will give the petroleum jelly ample time to work on the hair. Remove the towel after 30 minutes and wash hair with shampoo and water. You will instantly feel the difference. Your hair will be soft to touch and smooth. With regular use of petroleum jelly you will get rid of dryness and your hair will appear healthy and shiny. Alternatively, take a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly and apply it on damp hair and comb. This will keep your hair from getting frizzy and dry.

3. Treatment of hair using olive oil

Olive oil is basically used for healthy cooking. But since centuries women have been using olive oil to keep their skin and hair healthy. In fact a lot of beauty products have olive oil in them as one of the ingredients. Olive oil is known to take care of dryness of skin as well as hair. Warm the required quantity of olive oil (depending on the length of your hair) and apply the oil generously on your hair including the scalp.

Wrap a damp towel around your hair and leave for 30 minutes. The scalp and hair will absorb the goodness of olive oil.After the stipulated time unwrap the towel and wash hair with shampoo and lukewarm water. Perform this treatment every alternate day and in two weeks time your hair will look lustrous and healthy with no traces of dryness. You can also apply olive oil daily at night and wear a shower cap over the hair to bed. Wash off the oil in the morning.

4. Treatment of hair with gelatin

Dry hair require protein and gelatin is packed with the goodness of protein. Prepare a hair mask at home by mixing one tablespoon gelatin with one cup water. Let the mixture set slightly. If it sets all the way you will be unable to use it. In the mixture add a few drops of glycerin or olive oil, rosemary essential oil and orange blossom oil. Work the mixture through the hair and leave on for 15 minutes. Wash hair with shampoo and water. Do this treatment every alternate day if you have very dry hair that tend to become frizzy later towards the day. This protein mask will effectively cure the dryness of hair in a matter of two weeks. Once the dryness of hair subsides continue with the protein mask treatment once a week.

5. Treatment of hair with Avocado

Avocado is used in many shampoos especially made for dry hair. Avocado is a protein-rich fruit and cures dryness of hair by working on the hair shaft. The protein from the fruit moisturizes the scalp and strengthens the hair. Avocado hair mask is also excellent for treatment of split ends. Mash a ripe and peeled avocado in a bowl.

Add one teaspoon jojoba oil and one teaspoon olive oil to the mashed avocado and mix the three well. Apply this mask all over your hair covering the scalp well. Wear a shower cap and leave the mask on for 20 minutes. Wash off with water and shampoo. You can do this treatment every day if you have the time to spare otherwise using the avocado hair mask thrice a week will successfully cure the dryness of hair.

Tips for Preventing Dry Hair

1. Don’t wash dry hair every day. You will increase the dryness by using chemically formulated shampoos every day.

2. Don’t blow dry the hair. Use a soft towel to absorb water from hair and then let them air dry. Blow drying will cause your hair to become brittle and they will break easily when you comb.

3. Don’t use a brush to detangle the hair. Instead use a wide-tooth comb for de-tangling the hair.
